What is Formula SAE?

Formula SAE (FSAE) started in 1981, organized by SAE International with support from Professor Ron Matthews of the University of Texas. Originally a single U.S. event, it expanded globally after partnering with the UK’s IMechE, leading to the creation of “Formula Student.” Today, there are over 20 competitions worldwide, including three in North America. Variants like Formula Hybrid (2006) and the electric vehicle class (2013) have broadened the event’s scope.

The competition challenges university students to design, build, and race small formula-style cars. Acting as an engineering firm, teams compete in technical, business, and performance events. Formula SAE promotes hands-on experience in all areas of engineering, preparing students for real-world careers.
